The difference between NAATI CCL and the interpretation test

The full name of the CCL exam is the Credentialed Community Language Test. It is an English proficiency test organized by NAATI specifically for skilled immigrants after the 2018 NAATI exam reform. The CCL exam has only oral interpretation part, and the written translation and ethics exams have been canceled. By passing the exam, you can get 5 points for immigration with your transcript. You don’t need to apply for certification, but you cannot engage in professional translation work. For students who want to immigrate, they can choose the CCL exam and get the 5 points for the immigration.Compared with the original second-level interpretation test, the CCL test adopts the core part of the original second-level interpretation test, which is dialogue interpretation. However, since the CCL test is exempt from professional ethics and cultural questions, the threshold is lower. In terms of dialogue interpretation, it is difficult and requires practices and coaching.

Requirements

No.1 Conditions for applying for NATTI and CCL exams

         Suitable for applicants with a level equivalent to IELTS 6.

         Participating in NAATI interpretation and translation examinations requires a valid Australian student visa, 485 visa or any other visa holder with a validity period of not less than 6 months and no study restrictions.

         Compared with NATTI's interpretation and translation exams, the CCL exam has more relaxed requirements for visa holders and is also suitable for tourist visa holders.

No.2 Do you need relevant prerequisites before applying

         NAATI interpreting and translation and CCL are both examining the students’ ability of bilingual translation between LOTE and English, which includes a lot of grammar, vocabulary, excerpting and interpreting skills, rather than simple daily conversation and English ability.

         As far as NAATI's interpretation and translation are concerned, students cannot register for NAATI exams without relevant translation experience and relevant course training.

         Some prerequisite paths will require you to meet NAATI's language, ethics and/or intercultural competence standards. These may include:

Language ability: in line with the English proficiency standard set by NAATI. This may require taking a formal English proficiency test (e.g. IELTS test).

Cross-cultural competence: complete professional training or pass NAATI cross-cultural competence test.

Moral Ability: Complete professional training or pass NAATI Moral Ability Test.

         However, there are no additional language requirements and ethical culture tests for CCL exam registration.

No.3 The difference between CCL and Level 2 Interpretation Test

         The CCL test is a new form of NAATI interpretation test. The test content consists of two dialogues LOTE-English translation.

         The test format and difficulty are similar to the previous second-level interpretation test, but there is no need to examine professional ethics and cultural items.

         After the test, you can directly add 5 points to your immigration with your transcript, without applying for certification.
