Conditions

He should stay home too if his eyes are still red. Once the GP reviews your swab, they'll send any prescription electronically to your pharmacy.
Detail to keep: condition: if eyes still red
Note from the model answer: Staying home is conditional on the eyes still being red; also keep 'electronically' to the pharmacy.
How not to miss it: Keep the if or unless part attached to the action it controls. Do not turn a condition into a plain statement.
Order of events
62.9% of these information points were left out or changed (35 points in Swahili practice).
Example from our dialogue Acute Conjunctivitis Consultation · segment 7
Results usually come back within 48 hours. Please avoid touching your eyes, wash your hands often, and stay home from work until then.
Detail to keep: stay home from work until then
Model interpretation: Kwa kawaida matokeo hutoka ndani ya saa arobaini na nane. Tafadhali usiguse macho yako, nawa mikono mara kwa mara, na usiende kazini, kaa nyumbani hadi wakati huo.
Note from the model answer: 48 hours exactly (not 24, not 'a few days'), plus all three instructions.
How not to miss it: Keep before, after, until and then, and give the steps in the order the speaker gave them.
Negatives
53.7% of these information points were left out or changed (41 points in Swahili practice).
Example from our dialogue Acute Conjunctivitis Consultation · segment 4
Hakuna maumivu makali, lakini macho yanawasha kidogo. Mtoto wangu wa shule pia alikuwa na macho mekundu wiki iliyopita.
Detail to keep: no severe pain
Model interpretation: There's no severe pain, but my eyes itch a little. My school-age child also had red eyes last week.
Note from the model answer: 'No severe pain' is not 'no pain'; keep the qualifier, and keep 'last week', not 'this week'.
How not to miss it: Check the polarity before you speak. One missed not or no reverses the message.
Dates and times
53.1% of these information points were left out or changed (49 points in Swahili practice).
Example from our dialogue Acute Conjunctivitis Consultation · segment 8
Naelewa. Je, mtoto wangu anaweza kwenda shule kesho, au inampasa kubaki nyumbani pia?
Detail to keep: question: can child go to school tomorrow
Model interpretation: I understand. Can my child go to school tomorrow, or does he need to stay home as well?
Note from the model answer: It is a two-part either/or question about tomorrow; keep both halves and the question form.
How not to miss it: Note day, date and time as one block and keep them as said: next Monday stays next Monday, in two weeks is not soon.
