Hindi practice topics and interpretation examples
The Hindi entry refers to General Policy A, which requires understanding of regional variation and allows for it in marking. Regional dialect variation and words from English or other languages are permitted when commonly understood by Hindi speakers, especially in scientific and technical fields.
Using English numerals when speaking Hindi is penalised. Figures given in millions in English must be converted to lakhs or crores in Hindi, and the conversion must also be made in the reverse direction.

Amounts come up in most finance, housing, legal and insurance dialogues. The NAATI policy above penalises English numerals in a Hindi rendition and expects millions to become लाख or करोड़, and the reverse when you interpret into English. These are the conversions to have ready before the test.

No — no headsets, headphones or earphones of any kind. You use the computer's speakers and microphone. Older guides that tell you to wear wired headphones will get you caught out on the day. Only one screen is allowed at any time; your phone or tablet acts as the second camera.
Yes, with a pen and loose sheets of paper only. No typing of notes, and no electronic resources — dictionaries, web browsing, live captions or transcription — during the test.
Yes. One repeated segment per dialogue is allowed without penalty. Further repeats incur mark deductions.
NAATI's candidate instructions say results come by email within 4–6 weeks; they are issued individually as they are finalised, so two people who sat on the same day can hear back on different days. The result is valid for five years from the date of issue (three years if issued before 9 August 2022) and cannot be extended. You can apply to sit again six months before expiry, according to NAATI’s FAQ.
Yes. Credentialed Community Language points remain in the 189, 190 and 491 points tests. CCL is not a professional interpreting credential — passing it does not qualify you to work as an interpreter.
