Reviewing a Job Contract Before Signing
Solicitor (speaking English) and Worker (speaking Hindi) talk through “Reviewing a Job Contract Before Signing”. You interpret both ways — English into Hindi, and Hindi into English — one segment at a time, exactly as in the CCL test.

Under each segment: a model interpretation, the information points an examiner checks, and the easiest thing to miss. Try the segment yourself first, then open it. The model is one good way to say it; other wordings that keep every point score just as well.
Mr Awasthi, thanks for coming in. Tell me what the employer sent you, how many pages, and by when they want your answer.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Mr Awasthi thanked for coming in
- question: what the employer sent
- question: how many pages
- question: deadline for his answer
Easy to miss: Keep all three requests for information as questions.
Model answer and marking points
Yes, madam, the company sent this contract on the tenth of January. It is fourteen pages long. Work is due to start on the third of February, and they have asked me to reply by this Friday.
What an examiner checks here:
- Company sent the contract on 10 January
- Contract is fourteen pages long
- Work is due to start on 3 February
- Reply required by this Friday
Easy to miss: Do not confuse the contract's sending date with the work start date.

Interpret it aloud now →I've read all fourteen pages. Three clauses concern me: the probation period, the unpredictable weekly hours, and a restraint clause that could limit where you work later.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- All fourteen pages have been read
- Three clauses cause concern
- Probation period
- Unpredictable weekly working hours
- Restraint clause could limit where he works later
Easy to miss: The restraint clause could restrict future work; it is not stated to be a definite ban.
Model answer and marking points
Madam, what is the problem with probation? I have been working in warehouses for fifteen years. And what is a restraint clause? I did not understand it at all.
What an examiner checks here:
- question: what is wrong with probation
- Has worked in warehouses for fifteen years
- question: what a restraint clause means
- Did not understand the restraint clause at all
Easy to miss: The fifteen years refers to warehouse experience, not the probation period.
During probation, ending employment may be easier, so we check the wording. A restraint clause may stop you joining a competitor. If it's too broad, we may question it.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Ending employment may be easier during probation
- Exact wording therefore needs checking
- Restraint clause may prevent joining a competitor
- Clause may be questioned if too broad
Easy to miss: Preserve both qualifications: termination may be easier, and the restraint may be questioned if too broad.
Model answer and marking points
All right. But there is also the issue of hours. The contract does not specify guaranteed weekly hours. If I refuse to work a night shift, can they dismiss me?
What an examiner checks here:
- Working hours are also a concern
- Contract does not specify guaranteed weekly hours
- question: whether refusing a night shift could lead to dismissal
Easy to miss: Guaranteed weekly hours are missing from the contract; the speaker is not saying there are no working hours.
It depends on the wording and the law that applies to your job. I can't promise an outcome, but I'll check it and ask for clear, fixed minimum hours.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Answer depends on the contract wording
- Answer also depends on the law applicable to his job
- Cannot promise an outcome
- Will check the issue
- Will request clear, fixed minimum working hours
Easy to miss: Requesting fixed minimum hours is a commitment to ask, not a promise that the employer will agree.
Model answer and marking points
All right, madam. So should I hold off signing until then? The company is telling me to reply quickly, otherwise they will hire someone else.
What an examiner checks here:
- question: whether to hold off signing until then
- Company is demanding a quick reply
- Company says it will hire someone else otherwise
Easy to miss: Keep the request about delaying signature as a question.
Please don't sign yet. Tell them you need time for legal advice. If they pressure you, you can contact the Fair Work Ombudsman. Keep every message.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Do not sign yet
- Tell the employer time is needed for legal advice
- Can contact the Fair Work Ombudsman if pressured
- Keep every message
Easy to miss: The instruction is to delay signing, not to reject the contract.
Model answer and marking points
I understand. I will tell them today that I need advice from a lawyer. I will keep all their messages on my phone. What do I need to do next?
What an examiner checks here:
- Understands the advice
- Will tell the company today
- Will say he needs advice from a lawyer
- Will keep all company messages on his phone
- question: what he needs to do next
Easy to miss: Preserve the commitment to tell the company today.
Come back on Thursday with their reply. I'll have written notes ready, and we'll go through the termination clause line by line before you decide.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Return on Thursday
- Bring the employer's reply
- Written notes will be ready
- Review the termination clause line by line
- Review will happen before he decides
Easy to miss: The clause to be reviewed line by line is the termination clause.
Model answer and marking points
All right, madam. I will come on Thursday with their reply. Thank you very much for your help. I will not sign any document in a hurry.
What an examiner checks here:
- Will return on Thursday
- Will bring the employer's reply
- Thanks her for her help
- Will not rush into signing any document
Easy to miss: He promises not to sign in a hurry, rather than never to sign anything.
Terms in this dialogue that cost marks
CCL is marked on information transferred. These Australian terms have no direct word in most test languages — get one wrong and the segment's information is gone.
- Probation period
