How the points are worked out

Subclass 189, 190 and 491 share one points table. The calculator adds your points in each category, applies the employment limit, then adds the nomination points that belong to each visa. These are the values it uses. Home Affairs attaches conditions to most of them (for example, only employment in your nominated or a closely related skilled occupation counts), so read the source tables linked at the bottom before you claim anything.

Where NAATI CCL fits

The table gives 5 points for holding a recognised qualification in a credentialled community language. Home Affairs lists a community language credential for interpreting or translating by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters as one way to hold it. The Credentialed Community Language (CCL) test is NAATI's test for that credential.

Questions people ask

How many points do I need for subclass 189, 190 or 491?

At least 65. Home Affairs says that if you do not obtain a score of 65 points you will not be invited to apply, and that an invitation may state a score higher than 65 points depending on the claims in your expression of interest. Reaching 65 makes you eligible to be invited; it does not mean an invitation will follow.

How many points is NAATI CCL worth?

5 points. The Home Affairs table gives 5 points if you hold a recognised qualification in a credentialled community language, and lists a community language credential for interpreting or translating by NAATI as one way to hold it. The Credentialed Community Language (CCL) test is NAATI's test for that credential.

What is the difference between 189, 190 and 491 points?

The three visas share the same points table. Subclass 190 adds 5 points for state or territory nomination. Subclass 491 adds 15 points for state or territory nomination or sponsorship by an eligible family member. Subclass 189 has no nomination points.

How many points does English give?

Competent English gives 0 points, Proficient English gives 10 and Superior English gives 20.

Is there a limit on work experience points?

Yes. Overseas and Australian skilled employment are counted separately, but the most you can be awarded for employment experience is 20 points in total.

Can I be invited if I am 45 or older?

No. Home Affairs says you must be aged under 45 when you are invited to apply. The age table stops at less than 45 years.

Do single applicants get partner points?

Yes. You get 10 points if you are single or your partner is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, the same as an applicant whose partner meets the age, English and skill criteria.
