Thanks for coming in today, Mr Ali. Can you describe exactly what changes you've noticed lately in your eyesight over the past few months?

The examination shows a cataract in your right eye that's clouding your lens and affecting your central vision. We'll refer you for surgery at Liverpool Hospital.

Surgery is usually scheduled within six weeks of referral, unless your vision loss becomes severe enough to be treated as urgent.

Before the operation, you mustn't eat or drink anything after midnight, except a small sip of water up to two hours beforehand.

If you're diabetic, your GP may need to adjust your insulin dose the morning of surgery, so please check with them beforehand.
