Learning Support Plan for Mateo
Learning and support teacher (speaking English) and Parent (speaking Spanish) talk through “Learning Support Plan for Mateo”. You interpret both ways — English into Spanish, and Spanish into English — one segment at a time, exactly as in the CCL test.

Thanks for coming in, Mr Contreras. I'd like to talk about Mateo's reading. He's struggling, so we'd like to start a Personalised Learning and Support Plan, with adjustments in class.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- thanks Mr Contreras for coming in
- topic: Mateo's reading
- Mateo is struggling
- start a Personalised Learning and Support Plan
- adjustments in class
Easy to miss: Keep the full plan name (Personalised Learning and Support Plan) and the 'adjustments in class', not just 'a plan'.
Model answer and marking points
Yes, Miss, I've noticed it at home too. Mateo gets very frustrated with his homework and sometimes he even cries. What kind of help can you give him at school?
What an examiner checks here:
- father has noticed it at home too
- Mateo gets very frustrated with homework
- sometimes he even cries
- question: what kind of help at school
Easy to miss: 'Deberes' is homework, not duties; keep 'sometimes' and 'even cries' without softening.
He'll work with me in a small group twice a week, for thirty minutes. He'll also get extra time on tasks and shorter reading passages.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- small group with the teacher
- twice a week
- thirty minutes
- extra time on tasks
- shorter reading passages
Easy to miss: Two numbers back to back: twice a week and thirty minutes; don't swap or merge them.
Model answer and marking points
That sounds very good. But wouldn't it be better to know exactly what's wrong with him? My brother also had trouble reading as a child and nobody explained anything to him.
What an examiner checks here:
- father agrees with the plan
- question: wouldn't it be better to know exactly what's wrong
- father's brother also had reading problems as a child
- nobody explained anything to him
Easy to miss: It is the father's brother (Mateo's uncle), not Mateo's brother; keep the rhetorical question as a question.
Good question. Our school counsellor can do an assessment, but we need your written consent first. Then we'll share the results with you and explain them.
Model answer and marking points
Buena pregunta.
What an examiner checks here:
- school counsellor can do an assessment
- written consent needed first
- results will be shared with the parent
- results will be explained
Easy to miss: Don't drop 'written' from the consent, and the counsellor is the school counsellor, not a doctor.
Model answer and marking points
Of course, I'll sign the consent today. And what if the assessment shows something more? Do I have to take him to a doctor, or does the school decide that?
What an examiner checks here:
- will sign the consent today
- question: what if the assessment shows something more
- question: does he have to take him to a doctor
- question: or does the school decide
Easy to miss: Three questions in a row; keep both alternatives (doctor or school decides) instead of collapsing them.
If the counsellor recommends it, your family GP can refer Mateo to a paediatrician. The school can't do that referral, but we'll give you a written summary.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- condition: if the counsellor recommends it
- family GP can refer Mateo to a paediatrician
- school cannot make that referral
- school will give a written summary
Easy to miss: The negation: the school can NOT make the referral; also keep the 'if the counsellor recommends it' condition.
Entiendo.
Model answer and marking points
I see. My wife and I both work, but we can make an appointment with our GP. Will Mateo have to leave his regular class for all this?
What an examiner checks here:
- wife and father both work
- can make an appointment with the GP
- question: will Mateo have to leave his regular class
Easy to miss: 'Médico de cabecera' is the GP/family doctor; keep the final question as a question.
No, he'll stay in his regular class with his friends. We'll develop the classroom adjustments together with you, and review the plan at the end of term.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- no, he stays in his regular class
- with his friends
- classroom adjustments developed together with the parent
- plan reviewed at the end of term
Easy to miss: 'End of term' is not end of year; don't drop 'together with you'.
Model answer and marking points
That's very reassuring. What I fear most is that Mateo will feel different from the others, or think he's stupid.
What an examiner checks here:
- father feels very reassured
- his biggest fear
- Mateo feeling different from the others
- or thinking he is stupid
Easy to miss: Two fears joined by 'or'; keep both and don't over-soften 'tonto'.
Many children get this kind of support, and classmates won't see it as unusual. Please sign here. NSW public schools keep this information confidential.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- many children get this kind of support
- classmates won't see it as unusual
- request: please sign here
- NSW public schools
- information kept confidential
Easy to miss: Render NSW as Nueva Gales del Sur and keep the negation 'won't see it as unusual'.
Gracias, profesora, eso me alivia mucho. Firmo ahora mismo.
Model answer and marking points
Thank you, Miss, that's a big relief. I'll sign right now. I'll wait for you to let me know about the assessment and, if necessary, I'll make an appointment with our GP.
What an examiner checks here:
- father feels relieved
- signs right now
- will wait to be notified about the assessment
- condition: if necessary
- will book an appointment with the GP
Easy to miss: The GP appointment is conditional ('if necessary'), not a definite plan.
