Welcome to our enquiries desk. How can I help you today? If you have a statement with you, we can look through it together.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Welcome to the enquiries desk
- question: How can I help today?
- Can review the statement together if you have it with you
Easy to miss: Reviewing the statement together depends on the customer having it with them.
Model answer and marking points
This statement covers the first to the fifteenth of October. There are two entries of twelve dollars each on the eighth of October. I'm worried I might have been charged twice for the same purchase.
What an examiner checks here:
- Statement covers 1–15 October
- Two entries on 8 October
- Each entry is $12
- Suspects being charged twice for the same purchase
Easy to miss: There are two entries of twelve dollars each, not twelve dollars in total.

Interpret it aloud now →I can see two entries for twelve dollars on eight October. Before we investigate further, do you remember making any purchases in Ryde that day?
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Can see two entries of $12 each
- Entries dated 8 October
- question: Remember making any purchases in Ryde that day?
- Asks before investigating further
Easy to miss: The question asks about any purchases in Ryde, without assuming there were two purchases.
Model answer and marking points
I only made one purchase that day, at a pharmacy in Ryde. I also have a receipt for twelve dollars. Since retiring, I've been keeping a careful eye on my spending. That's why I came in to ask about this.
What an examiner checks here:
- Only one purchase that day
- Purchase at a pharmacy in Ryde
- Has a receipt for $12
- Carefully monitors spending since retirement
- Came in to ask because of this concern
Easy to miss: The customer made only one purchase, despite the two entries.
The matching amounts alone don't establish that you were charged twice. I'll check the transaction details and whether either entry is still pending or fully processed.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Matching amounts alone do not establish a double charge
- Will check transaction details
- Will check whether either entry is pending or fully processed
Easy to miss: Matching amounts do not prove that the customer was charged twice.
Model answer and marking points
I understand you're saying we can't draw a conclusion just because the amounts are the same. But what does it mean if an entry is still pending? Hasn't that money already gone to the shop?
What an examiner checks here:
- Understands matching amounts alone are inconclusive
- question: What does it mean if an entry is still pending?
- question: Hasn't the money already gone to the shop?
Easy to miss: Whether the shop has already received the money is a question, not a statement.
A pending entry reserves funds; payment to the shop hasn't finished processing. If both entries are completed, we can investigate. Your receipt helps us compare transactions.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Pending entry reserves funds
- Payment to the shop has not finished processing
- Can investigate if both entries are completed
- Receipt helps compare transactions
Easy to miss: Pending funds are reserved, and payment to the shop has not finished processing.
Model answer and marking points
The receipt is at home. Can I bring it in person? I'm not used to using the banking app on my phone. I'd prefer to discuss this in person and get it cleared up.
What an examiner checks here:
- Receipt is at home
- question: Can I bring the receipt in person?
- Not used to using the banking app on the phone
- Prefers to discuss and clarify the matter in person
Easy to miss: The customer is unfamiliar with the banking app, rather than saying they do not have a phone.
You can bring the receipt here, and we'll explain what happens next. I can't promise a refund, because we need to establish what caused these entries.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Can bring the receipt here
- Will explain what happens next
- Cannot promise a refund
- Need to establish what caused the entries
Easy to miss: The staff member cannot promise a refund; they are not refusing one outright.
Model answer and marking points
All right, we need to find out what happened first. I'm not expecting to get the money back straight away. Could you write down on a piece of paper which entries you're checking? It would help me when I come back next time.
What an examiner checks here:
- Need to find out what happened first
- Does not expect an immediate refund
- question: Can you write on paper which entries you are checking?
- Written details would help at the next visit
Easy to miss: The customer does not expect an immediate refund.
Certainly. I'll write down the entries we're checking and give you a reference number. Keep that note with your statement when you return with the receipt.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Will write down the entries being checked
- Will provide a reference number
- Keep the note with the statement
- Bring them when returning with the receipt
Easy to miss: The reference number is additional to the written details of the entries.
Model answer and marking points
Thank you. I'll keep that note and the statement together. I'll bring the receipt too when I come back next time. I'll feel reassured once I clearly understand why there are two entries.
What an examiner checks here:
- Will keep the note and statement together
- Will bring the receipt on the next visit
- Wants to understand clearly why there are two entries
- Understanding the entries would provide reassurance
Easy to miss: The customer wants an explanation for the two entries, without claiming a duplicate charge has been confirmed.
Terms in this dialogue that cost marks
CCL is marked on information transferred. These Australian terms have no direct word in most test languages — get one wrong and the segment's information is gone.
- Reference number"reference number"
Practise it
Reading a transcript is not interpreting. The practice room on this site plays each segment at native speed, records you, and marks the information you transferred against the same categories examiners use — omissions, distortions, insertions — so you know where the marks went.
