Getting a Nursing Qualification Recognised
Employment pathways adviser (speaking English) and Skilled migrant (speaking Malayalam) talk through “Getting a Nursing Qualification Recognised”. You interpret both ways — English into Malayalam, and Malayalam into English — one segment at a time, exactly as in the CCL test.

Under each segment: a model interpretation, the information points an examiner checks, and the easiest thing to miss. Try the segment yourself first, then open it. The model is one good way to say it; other wordings that keep every point score just as well.
Welcome, Mrs Kurian, please take a seat. You told our receptionist you worked as a nurse in Kerala. Let's talk about getting that qualification recognised here in New South Wales.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- welcome, please take a seat
- told the receptionist
- worked as a nurse in Kerala
- getting the qualification recognised
- in New South Wales
Easy to miss: Don't drop 'receptionist' as the source of the information or the specific state 'New South Wales'.
Model answer and marking points
Hello, sir. I worked as a staff nurse at a hospital in Kochi for twelve years. I came here eight months ago. Can I start working as a nurse straight away?
What an examiner checks here:
- staff nurse
- hospital in Kochi
- twelve years
- arrived eight months ago
- question: can I work as a nurse right now?
Easy to miss: Keep the two numbers distinct: twelve years of work versus arrived eight months ago.
Nurses are registered through Ahpra, with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. You can't work as a registered nurse until they approve you. First, they assess your qualifications and English.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- registration through Ahpra
- Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
- cannot work as a registered nurse until approved
- first step: assess qualifications
- and English
Easy to miss: The negation 'can't work until they approve you' must stay conditional, not become a flat 'you can't work'.
Model answer and marking points
But in the meantime I still have to cover my household expenses, sir. Can I work in an aged care home? And to apply to the Board, will my degree certificate and mark list be enough?
What an examiner checks here:
- need to meet household expenses in the meantime
- question: can I work in an aged care home?
- question: to apply to the Board
- degree certificate and mark list
- question: will they be enough?
Easy to miss: There are two separate questions here; both must be rendered as questions, not merged into one.
Aged-care employers can hire you as a care worker without registration; that's a separate job application. For Ahpra, certificates and marksheets aren't enough. You'll also upload identity and English evidence.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- aged-care employers can hire as a care worker
- no registration needed for that
- separate job application
- certificates and marksheets NOT enough for Ahpra
- also upload identity and English evidence
Easy to miss: 'Care worker', not 'nurse', and 'aren't enough' must stay negative.
Model answer and marking points
What happens if the Board here says my training isn't good enough, sir? Will I have to study again? I'm scared just thinking about it.
What an examiner checks here:
- question: what if the Board says my training is insufficient?
- question: will I have to study again?
- afraid when thinking about it
Easy to miss: Don't omit the speaker's expression of fear at the end.
If the Board finds gaps, you may need an outcomes-based assessment or an approved course, depending on your case. Don't pay anyone promising a guaranteed result; only the Board decides.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- if the Board finds gaps
- outcomes-based assessment or approved course
- depending on your case ('may' – not certain)
- don't pay anyone promising a guaranteed result
- only the Board decides
Easy to miss: Keep 'may need' and 'depending on your case' as possibilities, and keep the warning not to pay as a negative instruction.
Model answer and marking points
I understand, sir. I won't pay anyone. But I don't know how to start the application. Will you help me?
What an examiner checks here:
- understood
- will not pay anyone
- doesn't know how to start the application
- question: will you help me?
Easy to miss: Two negatives here ('won't pay', 'don't know') — both must be kept.
Yes, I'll help you set up your Ahpra online account. Please bring your passport and original certificates.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- yes, will help
- set up Ahpra online account
- bring passport
- bring original certificates
Easy to miss: Don't lose 'original' before certificates.
Model answer and marking points
Thank you very much, sir. I'll bring my passport and all my original certificates. So when should I come next?
What an examiner checks here:
- thanks
- will bring passport
- all original certificates
- question: when should I come?
Easy to miss: Keep 'all' and 'original', and render the last sentence as a question.
Come back next Friday at ten o'clock. If you can't make it, phone the Fairfield office and we'll change the time.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- next Friday
- ten o'clock
- if unable to come
- phone the Fairfield office
- time will be changed
Easy to miss: Get the day and time exactly right: next Friday at ten.
Model answer and marking points
Okay, sir. I'll come next Friday at ten in the morning. If I can't make it, I'll call the Fairfield office and let them know.
What an examiner checks here:
- next Friday
- 10 a.m.
- if unable to come
- will call the Fairfield office
Easy to miss: Keep 'in the morning' (രാവിലെ), which the speaker adds, and the conditional 'if I can't make it'.
