Thanks for coming in today. I'm Dr Harding, plastic surgeon at Royal North Shore, and I have your notes on the forearm scar from last year's accident here.

Can you show me the scar? It looks about six centimetres long. Does it cause any pain, or does it restrict movement when you bend your elbow?

We can perform a scar revision under general anaesthetic. Recovery usually takes about two weeks, but you must stop smoking at least four weeks beforehand, otherwise healing will be affected.

I'm afraid cutting down isn't enough. If you don't quit completely, your wound may not heal properly. I can refer you to Quitline for support.

Once you've stopped smoking for four weeks and had a blood test, we can book surgery within six weeks; expect about two weeks off work.
