Checking a Payslip Adjustment Code
Payroll officer (speaking English) and Warehouse employee (speaking Spanish) talk through “Checking a Payslip Adjustment Code”. You interpret both ways — English into Spanish, and Spanish into English — one segment at a time, exactly as in the CCL test.

Under each segment: a model interpretation, the information points an examiner checks, and the easiest thing to miss. Try the segment yourself first, then open it. The model is one good way to say it; other wordings that keep every point score just as well.
Let’s compare your payslip with the approved timesheets, Ms Valdés. Which code concerns you for the pay period ending 11 October at our Auburn warehouse?
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Compare payslip with approved timesheets
- Ms Valdés
- question: which code concerns her?
- Pay period ending 11 October
- Employer's Auburn warehouse
Easy to miss: Keep 11 October as the pay period end date, not the payment date.
Model answer and marking points
The adjustment code. For the period ending 11 October, I had six approved hours that I can't see reflected. I received one thousand four hundred and fifty dollars.
What an examiner checks here:
- Adjustment code
- Period ending 11 October
- Six approved hours not reflected
- Received $1450
Easy to miss: The six hours were approved but appear to be missing; they were not unapproved hours.
The payment record shows $1450, but that alone doesn't tell us how each hour was classified. Do you have the approved timesheets with you?
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Payment record shows $1450
- Amount alone does not explain classification of each hour
- question: does she have the approved timesheets with her?
Easy to miss: Do not imply that the recorded payment amount confirms all hours were paid correctly.
Model answer and marking points
Yes, I have them here on my phone. My supervisor approved them before the payroll cutoff. I'm worried because I don't understand whether that adjustment adds money to my pay or deducts it.
What an examiner checks here:
- Timesheets available on her phone
- Supervisor approved them
- Approval before payroll cutoff
- Worried about adjustment
- Unsure whether adjustment adds or deducts money
Easy to miss: Preserve the uncertainty about whether the adjustment increases or reduces her pay.
Thank you. These entries show six hours approved, while the payslip code identifies an adjustment. I need to check whether those hours were included elsewhere.
Model answer and marking points
Gracias.
What an examiner checks here:
- Entries show six approved hours
- Payslip code identifies an adjustment
- Needs to check whether hours were included elsewhere
Easy to miss: Checking whether the hours appear elsewhere is not confirmation that they do.
Claro. ¿Podemos revisarlas juntos? Puede que esté leyendo mal el recibo.
Model answer and marking points
Of course. I looked for those hours on the other lines, but I couldn't find them. Can we go through them together? I may be reading the payslip incorrectly.
What an examiner checks here:
- Searched other lines for those hours
- Could not find them
- question: can they review them together?
- May be reading payslip incorrectly
Easy to miss: Keep her possible misreading as a possibility, not an admission of error.
We can compare the hours line by line against the payroll entries. If anything remains unclear, I’ll ask your supervisor to confirm the timesheet details.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Compare hours line by line
- Compare against payroll entries
- If anything remains unclear
- Will ask supervisor to confirm timesheet details
Easy to miss: Contacting the supervisor is conditional on something remaining unclear.
Model answer and marking points
Yes, please. The hours worked line shows six fewer hours than the approved timesheet. My supervisor can confirm that I worked those shifts.
What an examiner checks here:
- Agrees to review
- Hours worked line shows six fewer hours
- Comparison with approved timesheet
- Supervisor can confirm she worked those shifts
Easy to miss: Say six fewer hours, not six hours in total.
I’ll record that discrepancy and check how the code affected this payment. We’ll correct the payment record once we’ve confirmed exactly what needs changing.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Will record discrepancy
- Will check code's effect on this payment
- Will correct payment record
- Correction after confirming exactly what needs changing
Easy to miss: The promised correction is to the payment record after verification, not an immediate extra payment.
Gracias.
Model answer and marking points
Thank you. When you've finished the review, could you give me a written explanation? I want to know where those hours were accounted for and whether the amount I'm entitled to changes.
What an examiner checks here:
- question: can she receive a written explanation?
- Explanation after review is finished
- Wants to know where hours were accounted for
- Wants to know whether amount she is entitled to changes
Easy to miss: Keep the written explanation as a request and preserve uncertainty about any change in entitlement.
Yes, I’ll give you a written explanation showing the comparison and any correction. Please keep your original payslip so you can check both records together.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Will provide written explanation
- Explanation shows comparison
- Explanation includes any correction
- Keep original payslip
- Check both records together
Easy to miss: The original payslip must be kept so both records can be checked together.
Model answer and marking points
All right, I'll keep the original payslip and the approved timesheets. That way, I can compare everything when I have the explanation and let you know if there's still anything I don't understand.
What an examiner checks here:
- Will keep original payslip
- Will keep approved timesheets
- Will compare everything upon receiving explanation
- Will report anything she still does not understand
Easy to miss: She will keep both the original payslip and the approved timesheets.
Terms in this dialogue that cost marks
CCL is marked on information transferred. These Australian terms have no direct word in most test languages — get one wrong and the segment's information is gone.
