Reviewing a Disputed Uniform Deduction
Workplace adviser (speaking English) and Former employee (speaking Spanish) talk through “Reviewing a Disputed Uniform Deduction”. You interpret both ways — English into Spanish, and Spanish into English — one segment at a time, exactly as in the CCL test.

Under each segment: a model interpretation, the information points an examiner checks, and the easiest thing to miss. Try the segment yourself first, then open it. The model is one good way to say it; other wordings that keep every point score just as well.
Let's look at the deduction on your final payslip. What did payroll tell you about the $75, and when was your last shift in Fairfield?
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Deduction on final payslip
- question: what payroll said about $75
- question: when the last shift in Fairfield was
Easy to miss: Keep both questions and the $75 amount.
Model answer and marking points
My last shift was on the thirtieth of September. Payroll told me the seventy-five dollars was for the uniform, but I returned both shirts.
What an examiner checks here:
- Last shift on 30 September
- Payroll said $75 was for the uniform
- Both shirts returned
Easy to miss: Both shirts were returned, not just one.
You mentioned returning two shirts. Who received them, and do you have a message, receipt or other record that might help us check what happened?
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Previously mentioned returning two shirts
- question: who received the shirts
- question: whether a message, receipt or other record is available
- Record might help check what happened
Easy to miss: The record might help establish what happened; it is not presented as conclusive proof.
Model answer and marking points
I handed them to my supervisor at the end of my shift. I have a message from her about handing them over, although I don't remember exactly what it said.
What an examiner checks here:
- Shirts handed to supervisor
- Handover at end of shift
- Message from supervisor about handover
- Does not remember exact message wording
Easy to miss: Having a message about the handover does not establish what it confirms.
That message could be useful. Does it confirm that both shirts were received, or does it only show that you arranged to drop them off?
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Message could be useful
- question: whether it confirms receipt of both shirts
- question: whether it only shows arrangements to drop them off
Easy to miss: Distinguish confirmed receipt from an arrangement to drop the shirts off.
Model answer and marking points
It only says I could leave them at reception. My supervisor was there and collected them, but she didn't give me a receipt. I didn't think I would need one.
What an examiner checks here:
- Message only permits leaving shirts at reception
- Supervisor was there
- Supervisor collected shirts
- No receipt given
- Did not think a receipt would be needed
Easy to miss: The message gives permission to leave the shirts; the supervisor's collection is a separate claim.
We can compare the payslip, that message and any uniform paperwork. We would need more information before reaching a conclusion about why the deduction appeared.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Can compare payslip and message
- Can compare any uniform paperwork
- More information needed before reaching a conclusion
- Conclusion concerns why deduction appeared
Easy to miss: Do not turn the proposed review into a conclusion about the deduction.
No sé si menciona descuentos.
Model answer and marking points
I have the uniform agreement saved on my phone. I don't know whether it mentions deductions. I'd like payroll to check their records because I'm quite worried.
What an examiner checks here:
- Uniform agreement saved on phone
- Does not know whether agreement mentions deductions
- Wants payroll to review their records
- Quite worried
Easy to miss: The speaker is unsure whether deductions are mentioned, not saying they are absent.
With your permission, we can ask payroll for a written explanation and the records they used. Would you prefer to contact them yourself or together?
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Permission required to approach payroll
- Can request written explanation
- Can request records payroll relied on
- question: contact payroll independently or together
Easy to miss: Keep the permission condition and the choice of contacting payroll alone or together.
Model answer and marking points
I'd prefer us to do it together. When I called, I got nervous and didn't explain the situation with the shirts properly. I want to clear it up without arguing with anyone.
What an examiner checks here:
- Prefers contacting payroll together
- Got nervous during previous call
- Did not explain shirt situation properly
- Wants clarification without arguing with anyone
Easy to miss: The speaker wants to avoid an argument, not abandon the enquiry.
Certainly. We'll prepare your questions together, including whether payroll recorded the shirts as returned. Keep the original messages and bring copies to our next appointment.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Will prepare questions together
- question: whether payroll recorded shirts as returned
- Keep original messages
- Bring copies to next appointment
Easy to miss: Whether payroll recorded the return remains a question, not an established fact.
Model answer and marking points
All right. I'll keep the original messages and bring copies of the payslip and the agreement. That way I'll be able to explain what happened more calmly.
What an examiner checks here:
- Will keep original messages
- Will bring copies of payslip
- Will bring copies of agreement
- Will be able to explain events more calmly
Easy to miss: The promised copies are of the payslip and agreement; the original messages will be kept.
Terms in this dialogue that cost marks
CCL is marked on information transferred. These Australian terms have no direct word in most test languages — get one wrong and the segment's information is gone.
