Mr Rao, your father was brought into Liverpool Hospital after a fall at home, and the scan shows swelling on the right side of his brain.
His Glasgow Coma Score is currently eight, and we need to monitor him closely in ICU over the next 24 hours to check the swelling.
A neurosurgeon is monitoring the pressure inside his skull. If it doesn't settle down soon, they may need to operate tonight to relieve it.
Recovery varies a lot with brain injuries. Some patients improve within weeks, others need months of rehabilitation, and we won't know more until the swelling reduces.
Yes, we'll need consent for any surgery. As his next of kin, you can sign the forms, but we won't proceed without your agreement first.
Visiting hours in ICU are limited to two visitors at a time, twice daily. You're welcome to wait in the family room between visits.
