Before we schedule your gallbladder surgery at Liverpool Hospital next Thursday, I'd like to review your medical history and explain what the procedure involves.
Doctor, estoy un poco nerviosa. ¿Qué tipo de anestesia me van a poner?
You'll have general anaesthesia, and we'll make three small incisions in your abdomen. You'll be admitted early on the morning of surgery.
Entiendo. ¿Desde cuándo debo dejar de comer y beber antes de la cirugía?
You must not eat or drink anything for six hours before the operation, otherwise we may need to postpone your surgery.
¿Y si tengo mucho dolor después? ¿Cuánto tiempo tendré que quedarme en el hospital?
Afterwards, we'll manage your pain with medication, and most patients go home the next day if there are no complications.
Doctor, mi hija quiere acompañarme. ¿Puede quedarse toda la noche en el hospital, o solo puede visitarme durante el día?
Yes, one support person can stay overnight in a chair beside your bed if you need help moving. Otherwise, visiting hours run from ten until eight.
Entiendo, gracias. ¿Y cuándo podré volver a conducir después de la operación?
You must not drive for 24 hours after the anaesthesia, so please arrange for someone to collect you from the hospital.
Gracias, doctor. Le pediré a mi hija que me recoja y se quede conmigo esa noche.
