Getting an Overseas Engineering Qualification Recognised
Employment pathways adviser (speaking English) and Skilled migrant (speaking Bangla) talk through “Getting an Overseas Engineering Qualification Recognised”. You interpret both ways — English into Bangla, and Bangla into English — one segment at a time, exactly as in the CCL test.

Under each segment: a model interpretation, the information points an examiner checks, and the easiest thing to miss. Try the segment yourself first, then open it. The model is one good way to say it; other wordings that keep every point score just as well.
Please sit down, Mrs Chowdhury. Welcome to our Cabramatta office. Before we talk about recognition, could you tell me about your qualification and the work you did overseas?
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Invitation to Mrs Chowdhury to sit down
- Welcome to the Cabramatta office
- Before discussing recognition
- question: what qualification she holds
- question: what work she did overseas
Easy to miss: Keep the request about both her qualification and her overseas work as a question.
Model answer and marking points
Yes, sir. I graduated in civil engineering from a university in Dhaka, and I worked on bridge and road projects for sixteen years. I don't know how to get started here.
What an examiner checks here:
- Civil engineering graduate
- University in Dhaka
- Sixteen years of work experience
- Bridge and road projects
- Unsure how to get started here
Easy to miss: The work experience is sixteen years, not sixty.
A sensible first step is a skills assessment of your qualification, through Engineers Australia. You will need your degree, transcripts, CV and passport.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Skills assessment as a sensible first step
- Assessment through Engineers Australia
- Degree certificate and transcripts required
- CV and passport required
Easy to miss: Keep Engineers Australia as the organisation's name and include all four required documents.
Model answer and marking points
I have my degree certificate and transcripts. But most of the documents are written in Bangla. Will I need to have them translated, sir? And does that mean I won't be able to work at all without that assessment?
What an examiner checks here:
- Has degree certificate and transcripts
- Most documents are in Bangla
- question: whether translation is required
- question: whether any work is possible without the assessment
Easy to miss: She asks whether she cannot work at all without assessment; she does not state that this is the rule.
Yes, use an accredited translator. Many jobs don't require the assessment, but some engineering work needs state registration. If the assessment shows gaps, a bridging course may help.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Use an accredited translator
- Many jobs do not require the assessment
- Some engineering work requires state registration
- Bridging course may help if assessment identifies gaps
Easy to miss: Do not turn assessment or state registration into a requirement for every job.
Model answer and marking points
I understand, sir. So how long might it take to get the assessment result? And can I do some other work while I'm waiting? I have to support my family too.
What an examiner checks here:
- Understands the explanation
- question: how long the assessment result might take
- question: whether other work is possible while waiting
- Needs to support her family
Easy to miss: Keep both the timing question and the question about working while waiting.
The assessment can take several weeks, so apply early. Nothing stops you working meanwhile. Many clients take site support or drafting jobs to gain local experience.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Assessment can take several weeks
- Apply early
- Can work while waiting
- Many clients take site support or drafting jobs
- Purpose is to gain local experience
Easy to miss: Several weeks is an estimate, not a guaranteed completion time.
Model answer and marking points
That's good, then. But sir, I'm forty-eight years old. Will anyone hire me as an engineer at this age? I'm very worried.
What an examiner checks here:
- Relieved that working is possible
- Forty-eight years old
- question: whether anyone will hire her as an engineer at her age
- Very worried
Easy to miss: Her age is forty-eight, not eighty-four.
Experience matters more than age. Employers value knowledge of Australian standards, so a short course can help. I can also introduce you to an engineering mentor.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Experience matters more than age
- Employers value knowledge of Australian standards
- A short course can help
- Offer to introduce an engineering mentor
Easy to miss: The offer is an introduction to a mentor, not a promise of employment.
Model answer and marking points
Thank you very much, sir. That makes me feel a little more reassured. So what do I need to do next?
What an examiner checks here:
- Thanks the adviser
- Feels a little reassured
- question: what she needs to do next
Easy to miss: Keep the final sentence as a question about her next steps.
Let's meet again in two weeks. Bring your documents and any translations. Please don't pay anyone who guarantees a result; only the assessing body decides.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Meet again in two weeks
- Bring documents and any translations
- Do not pay anyone who guarantees a result
- Only the assessing body decides
Easy to miss: Preserve the warning not to pay and the assessing body's exclusive authority to decide.
Model answer and marking points
All right, sir. I'll come back in two weeks and bring the documents and whatever translations are ready. If anyone asks for money promising a guaranteed result, I won't pay them, so you can rest assured.
What an examiner checks here:
- Will return in two weeks
- Will bring the documents
- Will bring whatever translations are ready
- Will not pay anyone asking for money for a guaranteed result
- Reassures the adviser
Easy to miss: She promises to bring whatever translations are ready, not that every translation will be finished.
Terms in this dialogue that cost marks
CCL is marked on information transferred. These Australian terms have no direct word in most test languages — get one wrong and the segment's information is gone.
Practise it
Reading a transcript is not interpreting. The practice room on this site plays each segment at native speed, records you, and marks the information you transferred against the same categories examiners use — omissions, distortions, insertions — so you know where the marks went.
