Joining the Library and Asking About Programs
Librarian (speaking English) and Resident (speaking Czech) talk through “Joining the Library and Asking About Programs”. You interpret both ways — English into Czech, and Czech into English — one segment at a time, exactly as in the CCL test.
English → Čeština
Your turn: interpret it aloud in the other language.

Read it first if you like, then practise it cold: the recording plays one segment, you interpret, the next segment plays. Marking shows, segment by segment, what you kept, left out or changed.
Full transcript with model answers
Under each segment: a model interpretation, the information points an examiner checks, and the easiest thing to miss. Try the segment yourself first, then open it. The model is one good way to say it; other wordings that keep every point score just as well.
Welcome to Bankstown Library. Are you here to join today? Membership is free, but I need to see something showing your current address.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- welcome to Bankstown Library
- question: here to join today?
- membership is free
- but needs to see proof of current address
Easy to miss: The 'but' condition matters: membership is free, yet proof of a current address is still required; do not drop 'current'.
Stačí to?
Model answer and marking points
Stačí to?
What an examiner checks here:
- yes, wants to join
- name: Josef Horák
- has lived here for twenty years
- has never been to the library
- has council rates notice with him, address is on it
- question: is that enough?
Easy to miss: 'Platební výměr od radnice' is a council rates notice, not a bill or tax return; keep the negation 'never been to the library'.
Your turn — don't read the rest yet. Hear this dialogue at native speed and interpret each segment aloud; AI marks what you kept, left out or changed, segment by segment. Your first two full dialogues are marked free.
Interpret it aloud now →Yes, a council rates notice is fine, Mr Horák. Here is your card. You can borrow books, magazines and DVDs.
Model answer and marking points
Ano, platební výměr od radnice stačí, pane Horáku. Tady je vaše průkazka. Můžete si půjčovat knihy, časopisy a DVD.
What an examiner checks here:
- council rates notice is acceptable
- addresses him as Mr Horák
- here is your card
- can borrow books, magazines and DVDs
Easy to miss: All three borrowable items (books, magazines, DVDs) must be listed; use the vocative 'pane Horáku'.
Model answer and marking points
Thank you. I like reading detective stories, but my eyesight is poor. Do you have large print books? And I'd also like to know whether there's anything here for people who want to improve their English.
What an examiner checks here:
- likes reading detective stories
- eyesight is poor
- question: do you have large print books?
- question: anything for people who want to improve their English?
Easy to miss: Two separate questions: large print books AND something for improving English; 'velké písmo' is 'large print', not 'big letters'.
Yes, we have a large print section on the ground floor. We also run a free English conversation group every Friday at ten o'clock. You don't need to book.
Model answer and marking points
Ano, máme oddělení knih s velkým písmem v přízemí. Také tu máme bezplatnou anglickou konverzační skupinu každý pátek v deset hodin. Nemusíte se předem objednávat.
What an examiner checks here:
- large print section exists
- located on the ground floor
- free English conversation group
- every Friday at ten o'clock
- no need to book
Easy to miss: 'Ground floor' is 'přízemí', not 'první patro'; keep Friday, ten o'clock and the negation 'no need to book' all intact.
To je skvělé. Manželka špatně chodí kvůli koleni a je často doma sama. Nešlo by to zařídit tak, aby jí někdo knížky vozil domů?
Model answer and marking points
That's great. My wife has trouble walking because of her knee and she's often at home alone. Would it be possible to arrange for someone to bring books to her at home?
What an examiner checks here:
- wife has difficulty walking
- because of her knee
- often at home alone
- question: could someone deliver books to her at home?
Easy to miss: Keep the reason (her knee) and render the request as a question, not as a statement that books will be delivered.
Yes, our home library service delivers books to housebound residents. If your wife can't get here, we can arrange it. I'll need her name and phone number.
Model answer and marking points
Ano, naše služba rozvozu knih domů doručuje knihy lidem, kteří nemůžou vycházet z domu. Pokud se sem vaše manželka nedostane, můžeme to zařídit. Budu potřebovat její jméno a telefonní číslo.
What an examiner checks here:
- home library service exists
- delivers books to housebound residents
- condition: if wife cannot get to the library, it can be arranged
- needs her name and phone number
Easy to miss: 'Housebound' means unable to leave home, not 'tied up'; the condition 'if your wife can't get here' must stay conditional.
Jmenuje se Marie Horáková. Její telefonní číslo neznám zpaměti, musím ho najít v mobilu. Můžu vám ho dát až zítra?
Model answer and marking points
Her name is Marie Horáková. I don't know her phone number by heart, I'll have to find it on my mobile. Can I give it to you tomorrow?
What an examiner checks here:
- wife's name: Marie Horáková
- doesn't know her number by heart
- must look it up on his mobile
- question: can he give it tomorrow?
Easy to miss: 'Až zítra' means not until tomorrow; keep the surname in its female form Horáková and keep the request as a question.
Tomorrow is fine. Just call us on the number on your card. We also run children's story time, if you have grandchildren who might enjoy it.
Model answer and marking points
Zítra to stačí.
What an examiner checks here:
- tomorrow is fine
- call the number on his library card
- children's story time is also offered
- condition: if he has grandchildren who might enjoy it
Easy to miss: The number to call is on his library card, not his own phone number; story time is for children, offered conditionally on having grandchildren.
Mám dvě vnoučata, holčičku a kluka. V sobotu k nám přijedou. Kdy to bývá a musím je nějak přihlásit předem?
Model answer and marking points
I've got two grandchildren, a girl and a boy. They're coming to us on Saturday. When is it usually on, and do I need to register them in advance somehow?
What an examiner checks here:
- two grandchildren
- a girl and a boy
- they are coming on Saturday
- question: when is story time?
- question: need to register them in advance?
Easy to miss: Two questions in one sentence (when, and whether to register in advance) both need rendering; 'sobota' is Saturday, not Sunday.
Story time is on Saturdays at half past ten, so that suits. It's free and no booking is needed. Would you like a printed timetable in large print?
Model answer and marking points
Čtení pohádek je v sobotu v půl jedenácté, takže to vychází. Je to zdarma a není třeba se hlásit předem. Chtěl byste vytištěný rozvrh s velkým písmem?
What an examiner checks here:
- story time on Saturdays
- at half past ten
- so that suits his plans
- free
- no booking needed
- question: would he like a printed timetable in large print?
Easy to miss: 'Half past ten' is 10:30, which is 'půl jedenácté' in Czech, not 'půl desáté' (9:30).
Ano, to bych rád, velké písmo se mi bude hodit. Děkuji vám za pomoc, paní. V pátek v deset hodin přijdu na tu konverzaci.
Model answer and marking points
Yes, I'd like that, the large print will come in handy. Thank you for your help, madam. I'll come to the conversation group on Friday at ten o'clock.
What an examiner checks here:
- yes, wants the timetable
- large print will be useful
- thanks the librarian for her help
- will come on Friday at ten o'clock
- to the conversation group
Easy to miss: Friday at ten is the conversation group; don't mix it up with Saturday half past ten story time.
Terms in this dialogue that cost marks
CCL is marked on information transferred. These Australian terms have no direct word in most test languages — get one wrong and the segment's information is gone.
Practise it
Reading a transcript is not interpreting. The practice room on this site plays each segment at native speed, records you, and marks the information you transferred against the same categories examiners use — omissions, distortions, insertions — so you know where the marks went. Your first two full dialogues are marked free.
