Thanks for coming in this afternoon, Madame Lefebvre. I'm the pre-admission nurse for your knee replacement at Concord Repatriation General Hospital next Thursday morning.
Merci de me recevoir. Je suis un peu nerveuse, c'est ma première opération chirurgicale.
That's completely understandable, and it's normal to feel nervous. I'll go through what to expect before, during and after surgery, and answer any questions you have.
D'accord. Combien de temps avant l'opération dois-je arrêter de manger et de boire ?
You must stop eating solid food six hours before surgery, and stop clear fluids two hours beforehand; please don't have anything else, not even chewing gum.
Je prends de la metformine pour mon diabète. Dois-je la prendre le matin de l'opération ?
Skip your metformine that morning unless your endocrinologist advises otherwise; the anaesthetist will review all your medications and confirm this again beforehand.
Combien de temps devrai-je rester à l'hôpital après l'opération, et si j'ai des soucis après ma sortie, qui dois-je contacter ?
Most patients stay three to four nights. If you have concerns after discharge, call the ward directly or contact your GP promptly.
Est-ce que j'aurai beaucoup de douleur après l'opération, et comment sera-t-elle gérée ?
You'll have pain relief through a nerve block initially, then oral medication; nurses will reassess your pain regularly, so it stays well controlled.
