Mr. Bandara, the ultrasound from Flinders Medical Centre shows a small mass on your liver that we need to investigate further.
We'll need a biopsy to confirm what type of tissue this is. The mass measures about three centimetres, and I've booked you for Thursday at nine thirty am.
The biopsy uses local anaesthetic and a fine needle, so you won't need a general anaesthetic or an overnight stay.
If the biopsy confirms cancer, treatment could include surgery, tumour ablation, or targeted therapy, depending on the tumour's size and your liver function.
If your liver function tests aren't strong enough, surgery won't be suitable, but ablation or chemotherapy may still control the tumour effectively.
I'll refer you to a liver cancer specialist and a care coordinator, and Cancer Council Australia can also provide support for you and your family.
