Dementia Assessment Review at a Memory Clinic
Geriatrician (speaking English) and Daughter (speaking Cantonese) talk through “Dementia Assessment Review at a Memory Clinic”. You interpret both ways — English into Cantonese, and Cantonese into English — one segment at a time, exactly as in the CCL test.

Under each segment: a model interpretation, the information points an examiner checks, and the easiest thing to miss. Try the segment yourself first, then open it. The model is one good way to say it; other wordings that keep every point score just as well.
Thanks for coming in today, Ms. Chan. I've reviewed your mother's memory assessment results, and I'd like to talk through what they show and what comes next.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Ms Chan thanked for attending today
- Mother's memory assessment results reviewed
- Explain what the results show
- Discuss next steps
Easy to miss: The assessment results belong to Ms Chan's mother, not Ms Chan.
Model answer and marking points
Oh, okay. I'm really worried because she's been forgetting things so often lately. What exactly does this score mean?
What an examiner checks here:
- Speaker is very worried
- Mother frequently forgets things lately
- question: what exactly the score means
Easy to miss: Keep the question about the score's meaning as a question.
She scored eighteen out of thirty on the cognitive test, which suggests moderate memory decline consistent with dementia, rather than normal ageing changes.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Cognitive test score of 18 out of 30
- Suggests moderate memory decline
- Consistent with dementia
- Not normal ageing changes
Easy to miss: Moderate describes the memory decline; do not turn it into a definitive diagnosis of moderate dementia.
Model answer and marking points
So how serious is her condition? Does she definitely have to take medication, or is it possible for her not to take it?
What an examiner checks here:
- question: how serious her condition is
- question: whether medication is essential
- question: whether she can go without medication
Easy to miss: She is asking whether medication is necessary, not refusing it.
There's a medication that can help slow the symptoms, but it won't cure the condition. She needs to take it twice daily, morning and evening.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Medication can help slow symptoms
- Medication will not cure the condition
- Must take it twice daily
- One dose in the morning and one in the evening
Easy to miss: Twice daily means morning and evening, not two tablets at once.
Model answer and marking points
Does that mean she can't drive herself places anymore? She normally drives herself to do the grocery shopping and see the doctor.
What an examiner checks here:
- question: whether mother can still drive herself places
- Usually drives herself for grocery shopping
- Usually drives herself to medical appointments
Easy to miss: Preserve the question about driving rather than stating that driving has already been prohibited.
Unless she passes a specific driving assessment, she shouldn't continue driving for now, as her reaction time and judgement may be affected.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Should not continue driving for now
- Exception if she passes a specific driving assessment
- Reaction time may be affected
- Judgement may be affected
Easy to miss: Do not reverse the 'unless she passes' condition or make the restriction permanent.
Model answer and marking points
That will make it really difficult for her to get around. Are there any support services that could help her?
What an examiner checks here:
- Getting around will be very inconvenient for mother
- question: whether support services are available
- Services sought to help mother
Easy to miss: The difficulty concerns getting around, not moving house.
You can contact My Aged Care to arrange an assessment for home support services, including transport, personal care, and help around the house.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Contact My Aged Care
- Arrange an assessment for home support services
- Transport assistance included
- Personal care included
- Help around the house included
Easy to miss: My Aged Care arranges an assessment; the services are not automatically approved.
Model answer and marking points
Will it cost a lot of money to apply for these services, or are there government subsidies to help with the cost?
What an examiner checks here:
- question: whether applying for these services costs a lot
- question: whether government subsidies are available
- Subsidies sought to help cover costs
Easy to miss: Keep both cost questions without assuming the services are free.
It's means-tested, but many services are subsidised for eligible clients. I'll book a follow-up review in three months at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital.
Model answer and marking points
What an examiner checks here:
- Services are means-tested
- Many services are subsidised
- Subsidies are for eligible clients
- Doctor will book a follow-up review
- Review in three months
- Review at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital
Easy to miss: The review is in three months, and subsidies depend on eligibility.
Model answer and marking points
Okay, thank you, doctor. I'll contact My Aged Care as soon as possible and then come to the follow-up appointment on time.
What an examiner checks here:
- Thanks the doctor
- Will contact My Aged Care as soon as possible
- Will attend the follow-up appointment on time
Easy to miss: The speaker promises to contact My Aged Care soon; she has not already contacted them.
Terms in this dialogue that cost marks
CCL is marked on information transferred. These Australian terms have no direct word in most test languages — get one wrong and the segment's information is gone.
Practise it
Reading a transcript is not interpreting. The practice room on this site plays each segment at native speed, records you, and marks the information you transferred against the same categories examiners use — omissions, distortions, insertions — so you know where the marks went.
