Pre-operative Assessment for Cataract Surgery

Mr Tanaka, thanks for coming in today. Have you noticed your vision getting cloudier, especially at night or when driving?
はい、特に夜間の運転が大変になってきました。対向車のライトがまぶしくて、道路標識もぼやけて見えるんです。
The scan shows cataracts in both eyes, more advanced on the right. We usually operate at Fiona Stanley Hospital as day surgery, one eye at a time.
手術のあと、どのくらいで仕事に戻れますか？運送の仕事をしているので、運転できないと困るんです。
Recovery is usually quick—most people return to light duties within ten days—but you shouldn't drive until your surgeon confirms your vision has stabilised.
全身麻酔になるんですか？年齢のこともあって、ちょっと心配なんですが。
Each eye takes about twenty minutes under local anaesthetic drops, so you'll stay awake but shouldn't feel any pain during the operation.
もし手術をしないで放っておいたら、どうなりますか？糖尿病はないんですが、他に気をつけることはありますか？
If left untreated, cataracts can eventually cause severe vision loss. If you had diabetes, we'd need your blood sugar stabilised first, but that's not a concern here.
糖尿病はありません。では、右目からお願いできますか？
Good, that simplifies things. We'll start with the right eye—please arrange pre-operative blood tests before your appointment next Thursday.
