TAFE
'TAFE'라는 영어 명칭을 그대로 사용한다.
'대학교'로 번역하면 오역이다. TAFE는 직업·기술 전문교육기관으로 대학과 성격이 다르다.
Public school
'공립학교'로 번역한다.
'국립학교'로 번역하면 어색하며, 영어의 영국식 용법(‘public school’=사립 명문교)과 혼동해 반대 의미로 옮기는 실수도 주의해야 한다.
VET
"직업교육훈련(VET)" 또는 "VET"라고 표현합니다.
발음이 같다는 이유로 "수의사"로 번역하면 완전히 다른 의미가 되어 문맥이 무너집니다.
NAPLAN
'NAPLAN'이라고 영어 약자를 그대로 사용하면서 '전국학력평가시험'이라고 짧게 설명을 덧붙이면 됩니다.
이를 '수능'이나 '입학시험'으로 번역하면 대학 입시와 관련된 시험으로 오해되는데, NAPLAN은 입시와 무관한 학년별 학력 진단 평가입니다.
Prep
'프렙(prep)'이라고 영어 발음 그대로 말하거나, '초등 준비학년'이라고 설명하면 됩니다.
이를 '유치원'이라고 번역하면 안 됩니다. Prep은 정규 학교 교육의 첫 학년으로 유치원(kindergarten)과 제도적으로 다릅니다.
HSC
'HSC(고등학교 졸업 자격증)'라고 영어 약자를 그대로 사용하면서 짧게 설명을 덧붙이면 됩니다.
이를 '수능'이나 '대학입학시험'으로 번역하면 한국의 시험 제도와 동일시되어 오해를 낳는데, HSC는 대학입학시험이 아니라 주별 고교 졸업 자격 제도입니다.
Kindergarten
'유치원'이라고 번역하면 됩니다.
일부 주에서는 kindergarten이 초등학교 첫 학년(즉 한국의 초1과 유사)을 가리키기도 하므로, 무조건 '유치원'이라고만 번역하면 문맥에 따라 학년 정보가 부정확해질 수 있어 주의가 필요합니다.
Scholarship
'장학금'이라고 말하면 됩니다.
이를 '대출'이나 '학자금 대출'로 번역하면 안 됩니다. Scholarship은 상환할 필요가 없는 지원금이므로 성격이 다릅니다.
Year 12
'12학년'이라고 말하면 됩니다.
이를 '고등학교 졸업'으로 번역하면 안 됩니다. Year 12는 학년 자체를 가리키는 말이며 졸업 여부와는 다른 정보입니다.
