Mr. Farkas, thank you for coming in - the ultrasound and blood tests from last month show a mass on your liver that we need to investigate further.

We'll need a biopsy to confirm what type of tumour this is, so I'm referring you to a liver specialist at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

It's a needle biopsy under local anaesthetic, so you won't need a general anaesthetic - there's only a small risk of bleeding afterwards.

Yes, chronic hepatitis C and cirrhosis increase the risk of this cancer, called hepatocellular carcinoma; your scan shows the tumour is about four centimetres.
