Catching Up on Rent Arrears
Community housing tenancy officer (speaking English) and Tenant (speaking Malayalam) talk through “Catching Up on Rent Arrears”. You interpret both ways — English into Malayalam, and Malayalam into English — one segment at a time, exactly as in the CCL test.
English →
Your turn: interpret it aloud in the other language.

Read it first if you like, then practise it cold: the recording plays one segment, you interpret, the next segment plays. Marking shows, segment by segment, what you kept, left out or changed.

Under each segment: a model interpretation, the information points an examiner checks, and the easiest thing to miss. Try the segment yourself first, then open it. The model is one good way to say it; other wordings that keep every point score just as well.
Mr Varghese, your rent account is nine hundred and sixty dollars behind. I'd like us to agree on a repayment plan today.
Model answer and marking points
In Roman letters: Mister Varghese, ningalude vaadaka accountil thollaayirathi aruppathu dollar kudishikayundu. Innu namukku oru thirichadavu plan theerumaanikkanam ennaanu ente aagraham.
What an examiner checks here:
- addressed to Mr Varghese
- rent account is behind / in arrears
- amount: $960
- wants to agree on a repayment plan
- today
Easy to miss: Getting $960 wrong, for example saying 690 or 916.
Model answer and marking points
Madam, I had surgery on my leg, so I haven't been able to go to work for two months. That's why the rent fell behind. My worry is how I'm going to pay it all off.
What an examiner checks here:
- had surgery on his leg
- unable to work for two months
- that is why the rent fell behind
- worried about how to pay it all off
Easy to miss: Dropping the cause-and-effect link between the surgery, missed work and the arrears, or misrendering the duration of two months.
Your turn — don't read the rest yet. Hear this dialogue at native speed and interpret each segment aloud; AI marks what you kept, left out or changed, segment by segment. Your first two full dialogues are marked free.
Interpret it aloud now →I'm sorry to hear that. Do you receive a Centrelink payment? If so, Centrepay can take a small amount for rent each fortnight.
Model answer and marking points
In Roman letters: Athu kettathil vishamamundu. Ningalkku Centrelinkil ninnu enthenkilum payment kittunnundo? Undenkil, Centrepay vazhi oro randaazhchayilum vaadakaykkaayi cheriyoru thuka pidikkaan pattum.
What an examiner checks here:
- expresses sympathy
- question: do you receive a Centrelink payment?
- condition: if so
- Centrepay can take a small amount for rent
- each fortnight
Easy to miss: 'Fortnight' must be rendered as every two weeks, not weekly or monthly.
Model answer and marking points
Yes, madam, I do get a small amount from Centrelink. If more than forty dollars a fortnight comes out, I won't have enough money for my medicine and bills.
What an examiner checks here:
- yes, receives a Centrelink payment
- the amount is small
- limit: no more than $40 a fortnight
- otherwise not enough for medicine and bills
Easy to miss: The condition is 'more than $40'. Do not turn it into 'only $40' or say $14.
Forty dollars a fortnight towards the arrears is workable. You can set up Centrepay through myGov, by phone, or at a Services Australia centre. I'll arrange our side once you agree.
Model answer and marking points
In Roman letters: Randaazhchayil naalppathu dollar kudishikayilekku adaykkunnathu nadakkum. Centrepay myGov vazhiyo, phoniloodeyo, allenkil oru Services Australia centeril poyo set cheyyaam. Ningal sammathichaal njangalude bhaagathuninnulla kaaryangal njaan shariyaakkaam.
What an examiner checks here:
- $40 a fortnight towards the arrears is workable
- set up Centrepay via myGov
- or by phone
- or at a Services Australia centre
- condition: officer arranges her side once he agrees
Easy to miss: Dropping one of the three set-up options (myGov, phone, Services Australia centre).
Model answer and marking points
All right, madam, I can manage forty dollars. I'm not very familiar with myGov. I'll get my son to do it when he comes home in the evening, or otherwise I'll phone.
What an examiner checks here:
- agrees he can pay $40
- not very familiar with myGov
- son will do it when he comes in the evening
- otherwise he will phone
Easy to miss: The negation 'not very familiar with myGov' can be lost, and the 'otherwise phone' alternative can be dropped.
Good. I'd also suggest the National Debt Helpline. It's free, and a financial counsellor can review your other bills with you.
Model answer and marking points
In Roman letters: Nallathu. National Debt Helplineine sameepikkaanum njaan nirdeshikkunnu. Athu saujanyamaanu, oru financial counsellorkku ningalodoppam ningalude mattu billukal parishodhikkaan kazhiyum.
What an examiner checks here:
- also suggests the National Debt Helpline
- the service is free
- a financial counsellor
- can review his other bills with him
Easy to miss: Omitting that the service is free, or that it covers his 'other' bills.
Model answer and marking points
Okay, madam. When I call the helpline, I'll find it hard to speak English. Can I get a Malayalam interpreter? Do I have to pay for that?
What an examiner checks here:
- will find it hard to speak English when calling the helpline
- question: can I get a Malayalam interpreter?
- question: do I have to pay for it?
Easy to miss: Both questions must stay questions. Do not merge them or turn them into statements.
Yes, ask for a Malayalam interpreter. It's free. If the deduction doesn't start, call me before the next rent day so we can avoid a notice.
Model answer and marking points
In Roman letters: Athe, oru Malayalam interpreterine chodichaal mathi. Athu saujanyamaanu. Thuka pidikkunnathu thudangiyillenkil, adutha vaadaka divasathinu mumpu enne vilikkanam, appol namukku oru notice ozhivaakkaam.
What an examiner checks here:
- yes, ask for a Malayalam interpreter
- the interpreter is free
- condition: if the deduction doesn't start
- call her before the next rent day
- purpose: to avoid a notice
Easy to miss: The condition 'if the deduction doesn't start' (a negation) and the deadline 'before the next rent day' are easily blurred.
Model answer and marking points
I understand, madam. What day is the next rent due? I'll try to get everything sorted before then.
What an examiner checks here:
- understands
- question: what day is the next rent due?
- will try to sort everything out before then
Easy to miss: Keep 'I'll try to' as an attempt rather than a firm promise.
Your next rent day is Thursday. Please confirm with me by then that the request is lodged. I'll note the plan on your file.
Model answer and marking points
In Roman letters: Ningalude adutha vaadaka divasam vyaazhaazhchayaanu. Apeksha koduthukazhinju ennu dayavaayi annekkullil enne ariyichu urappaakkanam. Ee plan njaan ningalude fileil rekhappeduthaam.
What an examiner checks here:
- next rent day is Thursday
- confirm with her by then
- that the Centrepay request is lodged
- she will note the plan on his file
Easy to miss: Mixing up Thursday with Tuesday (വ്യാഴം vs ചൊവ്വ), or dropping 'by then'.
Model answer and marking points
Okay, madam, I'll call and let you know before Thursday. Thank you very much for your help.
What an examiner checks here:
- will call and confirm
- before Thursday
- thanks her very much for helping
Easy to miss: 'Before Thursday' must not become 'on Thursday'.
Terms in this dialogue that cost marks
CCL is marked on information transferred. These Australian terms have no direct word in most test languages — get one wrong and the segment's information is gone.
- Services Australia'Services Australia'
Practise it
Reading a transcript is not interpreting. The practice room on this site plays each segment at native speed, records you, and marks the information you transferred against the same categories examiners use — omissions, distortions, insertions — so you know where the marks went.
