Thanks for coming in today, Mr. Kovalenko. Your blood results confirm an HIV diagnosis, and I'd like to talk you through the treatment plan now.
HIV isn't curable, but it's very manageable. You'll take antiretroviral medication once daily, which keeps the virus suppressed and protects your health long-term.
Side effects are usually mild and settle within weeks. Medication is subsidised, so cost won't be a barrier. I'll refer you to a specialist at John Hunter Hospital.
Your diagnosis is strictly confidential under Australian privacy law. We won't disclose it to anyone, including employers or family, without your written consent.
Your viral load test is booked for Thursday at 10:30 am, four weeks from now, to check how well the medication is working.
If you miss a single dose occasionally, it's not usually dangerous, but skipping doses regularly can let the virus become resistant to treatment.
