Ms. Kovaleva, thanks for coming in today. Let's talk through your options for breast reconstruction following your mastectomy at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

There are two main approaches: an implant, or a DIEP flap using tissue from your own abdomen. Surgery would happen roughly six weeks from now.

Recovery differs — the flap procedure needs about five days in hospital, the implant only two. Both carry risks of infection and scarring.

Unfortunately, we can't proceed with the flap surgery unless you stop smoking for at least four weeks beforehand — it affects blood flow to the tissue.

The implant still requires at least two weeks without smoking; otherwise your healing risk increases significantly, and infection becomes far more likely.
