Mr Kowalski, your blood test has come back positive for HIV. I want to explain what this means, answer your questions, and discuss the next steps together.

The laboratory confirmed the result twice, so there's no mistake. We'll also check your CD4 count, which measures how strong your immune system currently is, and start treatment soon.

Yes, you'll need to take antiretroviral therapy every day for life, but it's very effective and lets you live a normal, healthy life without major restrictions.

Most patients take just one tablet daily, combining three medicines together. It's much simpler than treatment used to be, with far fewer side effects.
